An amazing victory in Race 1 and a podium in Race 2 in the Hungaroring round put Michele at the top of the overall ranking of the International GT Open. In Hungary Michele gets his third victory of the season and gets on the podium of Race 2, preparing in the best way possible for the Italian round of the GT Open, at Imola (23 – 25 July).
Race 1 Michele and Shandorff scored a perfect race, managing to win despite the time penalty they had for having won the previous race, at Spa. Starting from the front row, Michele and Frederick Schandorff managed to fill the ten-second gap, taking the third success of the season. The victory also came thanks to an impeccable Michele’s defence, who was able to easily control the attacks from the other Lambo of the VSR, during the last ten laps.
In Race 2 everything took place quite regularly until twenty minutes from the end, when the Lamborghini of VSR #63 was in the top positions. In this phase of the race, a sudden downpour reshuffled the hierarchies, imposing new strategies on the teams and great attention on the drivers.
Michele’s team, Vincenzo Sospiri Racing (VSR), chose not to recall the car to change tires, confident that the rain would not last long. The strategy paid off and Michele got on the podium, with a third place, collecting other precious points for the overall ranking.
Actually, under the chequered flag of Race 2, the Lamborghini Huracan #63 crossed the line in second position, but due to a 10’’ penalty, caused by an infraction during the stop (lack of respect for the stop time during the pit), Mike and his partner slipped to the bottom step of the podium.
“We did a good performance, especially in Race 1, we won despite the penalty we had to pay for the victory at Spa. In Race 2 we lost the second place due to an error in the timing of the penalty, but we must also say that the team managed the rain phase very well, not calling us back to change tires and insisting on slicks.”
Michele, despite the third success of the season, the podium and the lead in the standings, analyses some aspects to be perfected and makes an appointment at the Enzo and Dino Ferrari at Imola, within two weeks.
“We have excellent strategies and we are always competitive in the race, but we have to do better in qualifying. Especially at Imola, where we will serve an important penalty in Race 1, it will be essential to start from the front, I wish in pole. “
